Blog 2 Electric Boogaloo

I would pitch A Boy's Life as a film that has enough entertainment and excitement for the kids, but enough story and heart that will keep the parents cheering for E.T. right along with the little ones. I would tell the potential producers about the warm family feel to an other wise sci-fi flick. Definitely point out key story aspects such as kid’s p.o.v. vs. parent’s p.o.v. and the bond of a boy and his new found "out of this world" friend. I guess one of my main points in the pitch would be to win over the producers enough as to get the expected budget. I couldn't imagine making A Boy's Life with a Roger Corman/shoe string budget. Seeing a duck taped puppet talking to a bunch of bad actors on a cheap plywood set wouldn't bust any blocks. Finally I would tell them of the potential for a cross genre film like this. Kind of a Close Encounters of the Third Kind meets Pete's Dragon. In this film we combine a child befriending a character that kids identify with and deeper more meaningful story about still believing in fairy tales. Kids want to drag their parnets to the film over and over again and the parents don't mind at all.

Questions:
1. How do you think A Boy's Life would have turned out if it was Produced by Roger Corman?
2. What would have happened if A Boy's Life/ E.T. were never made?

If Roger Corman produced it, I wouldn't know how it turned out because I wouldn't have seen it or known about it. But I'm sure plenty of B-movie fans would love it.

And if Speilberg never made E.T., I'm sure someone else would have. The aliens come to earth storyline has been done over and over and over, that I'm sure someone would of had the idea to make a kid/alien bonding comedy.

Oh and apparently Reece's Pieces wouldn't exist anymore.

If Corman produced, or better still, DIRECTED A Boy's Life/E.T., it would have been dramatically altered. First of all it would have 1/32 of the budget Spielberg had, so the Special Effects would've been incredibly cheesy and hilarious. Secondly, I believe Corman would have made the film much more violent, with E.T. having to eat kids in order to stay alive or something. Also, there would have been less emotional power to the film, since most of Corman's work aims for cheap thrills (not dissing the guy, cuz I myself LOVE cheap thrill movies).
