The movie is titled, A Boy's Life. The story takes place in the quiet suburban area of southern California. The story looks deep into the connection between a young boy, Elliot, and a lost alien named, E.T. From the start of the movie there is a mystical connection between the boy and the alien, each of them can feel each other's feelings; if E.T. feels sad and lonely then Elliot feels sad and lonely. On a deeper level the story touches on a theme that infers children are smarter than adults. The bulk of the story deals with Elliot and family aiding E.T. in getting back to his ship and his family. This film would be a great family drama. The story takes the audience through a roller coaster ride of happy and sad emotions that build to an all time great catharsis. The film would be appreciated by both men and women of all ages.
Reading Questions:
1.) In the Weston readings the author talks about the intense need for an actor and director to play the subtext of the script as opposed to the words themselves. She speaks very adamantly about this. Why then does she completely switch view points and praise those that don't look deeply into the subtext?
2.) McKee speaks of a genre refered to as Art Film. What is an example of an Art Film?
