I just finished reading The Apartment. It was a little difficult to get into it in the beginning of the screenplay because I stereotyped it as a sappy romantic comedy, but to my surprise I really enjoyed in. The characters were perfectly balanced with one another and as the story went on it gave more background to the characters and showed their complexity. One of the things that really worked for me was the trouble that Bud goes through to make his neighbors think that it's him with all the different girls in his apartment, even up to the end of the story when Dr. Dreyfuss comes over for some ice Baxter still keeps to the lie.
I really can't think of anything that doesn't work in this story, the only thing I thought of is Fran's brother in law punching Bud. But that was because Bud kept up his lie in front of Dr. Dreyfuss.
Discussion Questions:
1. How do you think the movie would change if it were to be done in modern day?
2. Which of the characters actions discussed you most? and what was it?

The Story would definitely need to be altered if it were modernized. The corporate world has changed greatly in the past 50 years and its a lot harder for things like this to happen without the wrong people finding out which could lead to people getting fired, or sued, or upteeen other things...not to mention the fact I don't know when the last time I saw an elevator operator was....as I said in my post I found a few elements that reminded me of a move called "The Secret of My Success." I do think it could work in a modern setting but several things would need to be adjusted.
i believe that if the "right" people were having these affairs such as executives that can pull rank as they did in this screenplay, it would be seemingly easy to keep it a secret. worse things have been done in corporate offices that have been cloaked by their position such as fraud, or selling products that were made immorally overseas. what i wonder now is how would women today react to the men's pursuit?
