After reading The Apartment, I can’t help but compare it to The Pursuit of Happiness with Will Smith. Throughout a good portion of both the film and the screenplay of The Apartment continually I telling myself, “If something doesn’t go his way I am not watch/reading the rest of this.” This is what makes the ending work for me. Over and over Bud gets so close to Fran, only to be shut down. Until finally at the end e gets what he was after. Also, the screenplay ends in a way that works. It’s not a typical happy ending when guy gets the girl. It leaves it open for the audience’s imagination. What I would have like to see is for the doctor to see the true Bud and not leave him thinking that Bud was such a ladies man. Other than that everything seemed to be very well written.
How successful would this film be with today’s audience?
What would you think if Bud ended up killing himself in the end?
