Blog 4: VOICE

Every screenwriter has his or her own voice. It seems as though within the stories A Boy’s Life, The Apartment, and Adaptation each author shares a likeness in writing. Mathison, in writing A Boy’s Life, focuses heavily on camera direction and scene description. This makes her script less novel like, while The Apartment and Adaptation are written more like a story you’d pull off a shelf. Adaptation, on the other hand, is different from the other two in the way that the plot was written. Very choppy and reminiscent-esque is the story Adaptation. In comparison to the other two scripts this one is particularly difficult to read. Wilder’s script, different from the others, is extremely laid-back and very simple in dialogue, tone, and manuscript. With that said it is clear that each film, though many similarities link them, are highly personalized and unique. A Boy’s Life, The Apartment, and Adaptation all embody this fact.

1. How would you compare the A Boy’s Life and The Apartment?

2. How do you think the writers of Adaptation would see A Boy’s Life and The Apartment, with regard to the way they were written.
