A Boy’s Life, The Apartment, and Adaptation have different authorial voices. A Boy’s Life by Melissa Mathison is composed in standard script formant. Her voice is very maternal giving the material a warm, charming feeling. The Apartment by Wilder and Diamond was composed with the attention that Wilder would be directing. Wilder and Diamond’s approach to The Apartment seemed very economical. However, The Apartment closely resembled verbal storytelling by having a narrator guiding the story with comments about the scenes. It causes the material to be very fluid and approachable. Adaptation by Kaufman is his own stand-alone creation. The script should be considered a work of its own instead of a companion to the film. He played with time and reality through the course of his work with a strong personal voice.

Questions:

1. Do you believe you can get more knowledge from reading books like Weston then watching films, especially those by great directors?

2. Do you believe that the main protagonist has to be likeable (a nice guy) or that the only requirement is that he should be intriguing?

The main protagonist doesn't have to be likable or intriguing at all. The protagonist should be the one driving the action. The protagonist should be the one who allows access into the story. The protagonist should be the one conquering or creating obstacles. The protagonist can do any and all of these things without being likable or intriguing.
