Melissa Mathison, Billy Wilder, and Charlie Kaufman are all great writers. And all of them have a unique, subtle difference in the style of their writing. Melissa Mathison, wife and mother of two, tells the family tale E.T. the charming story about a cute alien who befriends some children. The story she tells deferrers from Billy Wilder’s “Apartment”. His story tells the twisted tale of a young, aspiring businessman who does everything it takes to make it to the top. Wilder, a former lawyer himself, has much experience in how twisted the business world can get, and it shows in his writing. Charlie Kaufman, an aspiring filmmaker since high school, goes as far as writing himself into a story, a brilliant way of putting his own voice and thoughts all throughout the screenplay.
