The three screenplays differ in many ways, the authorial voice is very different for all three. The main reason they differ is because they are written for different audiences. Each movie caters to a specific audience, one is for families, the other is for couples, a date movie, and the last is a campy comedy. The movies are also from different time periods, this will make the language different, the fact the movies are from the 80's, 50's, and the beginning of this century will make different perspectives and language that will be acceptable. Having a masturbation scene with Bud in The Apartment wouldn't be appropriate in the 50's, but to have Charlie Kaufman have a jerk-off scene is simply funny today. The authorial voice differ in perspective too, meaning how the story unfolds. A Boy's Life is told through the actions and dialog of the character, Adaptation is told through Charlie's narration, and The Apartment is a mixture of the two styles.

1. Are voice over and narration a good idea, or should the story be told through dialog?
2. Is authorial voice different because of the author, or because of the genre, time period, and setting the script is being wrote for

1. Voice over and narration can be a good idea when used cinematically. The artist needs to be aware of his medium at all times so he needs to present his material to the constructs of the chosen material. A problem that many filmmakers especially beginners make is that they use voice over to explain the story in a literary way, not a cinematic way. The use of this tool as a crutch causes a weak use of the cinematic material.
