There is a very noticeable difference in the authorial voices displayed in Adaptation, The Apartment, and A Boy's Life. I found Adaptation more difficult to follow along, I think because there were so many different characters involved and it kept jumping from one character to another, making it hard to stay focused and keep a clear visual in my head of what exactly was going on. I didn't have this problem when reading the other two scripts because they really only focused on a couple characters most of the time. Also, I think Adaptation did a worse job than the other two of introducing the characters and giving us enough back story to understand them from the beginning.
Technically, Adaptation and A Boy's Life seemed to be written with camera shots and movements in mind, whereas The Apartment didn't really focus on camera direction. I liked the approach of The Apartment better, simply because it's easier to follow the story without the added direction.
Bottom line, when reading Adaptation it was hard for me to see the movie in my head, there was just too much going on at the same time and that made it hard for me to see what the writers were seeing. The other two screenplays were written clearly enough for me to be able to create the movie in my mind. I think I'm going to have to read this one a second time...
Questions:
1. For those who haven't seen the movie, were you able to follow along with this screenplay and keep a constant movie playing in your head?
2. Were you able to understand/sympathize with the characters in Adaptation better or worse than the characters of the other two screenplays?
