I would say that the controlling idea in The Apartment is pessimistic. Many issues dealt with in the script were very negative. Secret relationships, backstabbing, and suicide were many of the main components of the script. Even after reading the entire script, we still don't know how life ended up for Bud. We are unsure if he ends up with Fran and is still a top guy at the company.
