Pulp Fiction utilizes a nonlinear arrangement. With this organization, each event is enabled the ability to remain independent. The sequences are free of chronological aspects but still hold associative relevance between each other. Tarantino is allowed to freely demonstrate three disparate narratives with the nonlinear methodology. Audiences experience certain characters with slightly different perspectives. Explanations are delivered later on that were possibly ambiguous or altogether unclear. Breaking the traditional structure of linear story opens the door to much more possibilities. Characters hold the liberal opportunity to make their way in and out of the varying sequences. In relation to this, each character’s actions within a certain perspective, determines their significance and overall weight. Changing with every new sequence, the protagonist’s views and values are pivoted upon. Furthermore, the nonlinear structure strengthens the relationship and provocation of the viewers as it requires their full attention to properly understand and follow the story.
Discussion Questions
1. How does viewing the film in chronological order affect the film?
2. Which sequences give the most resonance throughout the narrative?
