As I was reading The Witness, I realized that it was not like many of the other scripts we have read in class. In order to evoke a film in my mind, I feel that the authors did not use as many stage directions but used more of a novel style to express to the reader what is taking place. Simple adjectives and verbs are used to give the reader a sense of what action is currently happening. I think that this is way more effective. Many readers lose concentration if there is a lengthy amount of text. Without being too detailed, this allows the reader to use imagination and develop the film in their own mind. I also liked how the authors used the direction "his POV" in the script. Instead of saying "Book saw..." it can give the reader a better understanding of the situation.
Discussion Questions
1. Compare The Witness and Do The Right Thing in regards to visual language.
2. Did you feel that there were any unnecessary scenes as you were reading The Witness?
