Witness Blog

In the Witness visual language was used well to set the scenes. For example the first scene in the script uses quite a bit of description to set the scene up. The authors, Kelley and Wallace, describe the colors and the mute colors of the funeral. They also basically take the reader from shot to shot of the different descriptions. Thus, while reading in your mind you can envision the movie playing out. Kelly and Wallace throughout the script also have places where they specify that the angle is on a certain character. This also helps the reader to know that in the movie the focus of this certain part is this certain character. Although it is not approved of today I find scripts that have camera directions for the shots also help to create the visual image of the movie in your head because you know exactly how the camera is moving and so you can picture it like that in your head. Therefore there use could be considered a technique to evoke a film in one’s mind. However that does not leave room for creativity and imagination on the part of the reader or the director of the screenplay.

Questions:

1. How do you think the script would be different if either Kelly or Wallace had written it alone?

2. Did you feel that some of the characters in the script were unnecessary?
