Blog #7

Boogie Nights was probably my least favorite read this semester. In my opinion, the storyline was not engaging, and even though many of the characters were well developed, I personally didn’t find many of them to be particularly likable or interesting. The script relied too heavily on sex and controversy to be successful and not enough on crafting together an intriguing story. I think that the subject matter would have been better suited as a comedy, but instead we find a rather serious and disturbing drama filled with themes of drugs, prostitution, and even death. That being said, I have heard mostly good things about the film, which I have not seen, but I was rather disappointed by the script.

1. Do you agree that Boogie Nights relied too heavily on controversial topics? Could it be successful otherwise?
2. Do you think Boogie Nights would have worked better as a comedy?
