Script Analysis has been the most educational experience I have had at this college. We
benefit from this class because we get to study the very
beginning of the
film making process. I never read screenplays before this class and I didn't realize I would enjoy reading movies as much as I enjoyed watching them. For a student of anything, this class is important because we studied many different writers with
their own unique style, and we've learned that the rules don't matter as long as the ultimate concept is good. By analyzing scripts, we are also considering all the other aspects of
film making and getting an all encompassing education on the entire inner workings of the movie business. Also, studying talented writers with varying styles is very stimulating, and the
experience of exploring different takes on the same form of art gave me perspective on the process of writing and storytelling in general. One thing that
definitely worked was the work load. You were right
about film teachers not giving
their students enough work. This has been the most challenging class I have taken since enrolling in this school; and even though I didn't do most of the work, I realize it was important, and it was nice to have a class that challenged me. From now on, when I watch movies, I will be wondering what the writing process was like. Since the
beginning of this class I
haven't been able to watch a movie without wondering what the guys who wrote it were thinking at the time, or if the writers are happy with the directors interpretation. I have learned about the art of storytelling, and that individualism is the key to writing a marketable screenplay. Continue to show the documentary on aspiring screenwriters. It's very depressing, and a refreshingly honest look at the world of the failed auteur. I am now aware of the fact that all movies begin with the writers and a script. All the other elements are put in place later as a result of the screenplay.
This class has given me a great
appreciation for the screenwriter and the process of creating a movie from the written word. I now pay much closer attention to who is writing the movies and shows that I'm
watching. The bottom line is, this class gives us perspective. Studying
differing artists opens our minds to new and unfamiliar possibilities. And new possibilities are what the movie
business is all about.
Question 1
Was it more important that we studied very talented writers, or that we studied such a wide array of writers?
Question 2
Did we really analyze scripts or did we just learn from them, and in doing so gained different perspectives on writing and on the process of film making?
