Blog # 3

I am a big fan of this screenplay. It was nice to have not seen the movie prior to reading. It allows one to imagine what it would look like themselves. What I think worked the best in this screenplay is the author's use of subtext. Subtext is so strongly used in the dialouge. Which really would give the director and actors a great oppurtunity to make each scene their own. I found myself imagining how each scene would look and feel at every turn of the page do to the strong use of subjective subtext. I also think the screenwriter did a great job of creating each character. They really came to life. Specifically, Fran's character really comes off like a delightfully cute yet sad and abused person. Making her someone who gets taken advantage of alot really creates great sympathy with the reader. The same goes for Bud. The sympathy created through him being taken advantage of does alot for his character. It also makes for great foreshadowing that Bud and Fran will eventually get together. However, I do not think that a girl like that would ever go for a nice guy like Bud in real life. She is the kind of girl who will never be attracted to a guy that would treat her well. That is a great component of movie making. It makes the unbelievable believable.

Discussion Questions:

1.) If this movie were made in modern times, who do you think would be a good cast for the Bud character, and why?

2.) According to the McKee readings, character and structure are the same. As a character changes so must the structure of the story and vice versa. Is there anyone who disagrees with this idea, and why?
