The Apartment, written by Billy Wilder, is the most well put together screenplay I have ever read. I expected this since it is one of the top twenty five screenplays of all time. Wilder uses words like steel and gray to lay visual emphasis on Baxter’s life at his job. The overall transition of the piece was well done. The pace in this piece was very upbeat, making it very easy to follow the story. I was not confused as to what is going on in the story at any point during the read. However I see no point in the scene where Baxter tells Fran that he has read her personal file, and he memorized her information, including her social security number. I find that there is no purpose for this scene whatsoever. But no piece of work is perfect; this screenplay is 9/10.
Discussion Questions:
Why do you think Wilder included the scene mentioned?
Do you believe this screenplay deserves a spot in the top 25 of all time?
