Blog Assignment #3

The Apartment is a very clever and well written screenplay. It has a very simple story line and because of its simplicity, it captures the readers and keeps them there. The reader wants to find out how everything will shape up. Some of the things that worked well was how well defined the characters were, and how clear each of the motives were made from the get go. An example of that is of CC Baxter. From the opening scene it was clear that he would do anything to advance his career and to keep moving up in the insurance business. As far as his superiors, it was made clear that they only talked to Baxter because of his apartment and what it can do for them.

Some things that did not work well was how descriptive the script could be at times. It is always pleasant to have those descriptions especially in such detail, but at the same time as a director, I would find it very frustrating. It almost limits the creativity and forces the director to be in the vision of the screenwriter instead of develop their own. Like I said, the details are nice, but only if it were a novel.

Discussions:
1. How would you feel as a director if you had to work with this script? Would you feel limited or would you work with what you got and make it your own?

2. As a director, how would you direct your actors regarding the subtext?
