Within a suburb near a peaceful and awesome redwood forest resides a lonely, young boy, Elliot, and his unconventional family. In a night’s time, Elliott discovers an unearthly answer to his sense of aloneness. A stranded alien, E.T., by fortune crosses the path of young, friendly (yet friendless) Elliott. Unsure of what to do, Elliott lures his new companion in his home with Reese’s Pieces. The boy constructs a fort inside his closet and secretly hides the extra terrestrial from his mother. As time endures, a relationship develops between E.T. and Elliott and an otherworldly bond is shared between these individuals. They even begin to experience similar thoughts and emotions. However, good things do not last forever. E.T. gradually becomes strangely ill. The mystical bond between the two takes an unfortunate turn, Elliott grows sick as well. With Elliott’s health turning grim, his ability to keep his friend’s presence clandestine ceases to exist. Not only does his mother find out, but the government right after her.

Discussion Questions
1. Would E.T. be the same film without the various technical comments?
2. What would Ozu say to Thorp’s quote, “when a motion picture ceases to move it dies.”
