Final Blog
I thought this class was very beneficial. It was my first experience actually reading scripts. Before I took this class I always believed that Scripts would be more structured and there was a right and a wrong way to write scripts. However after taking this class I realized there is no right or wrong way to write a script. The writing style can vary a great deal depending on the screenwriter. Another misconception that this class corrected was the fact that I thought that screenplays were supposed to have lots of camera directions. Thus I was surprised to learn that in fact directors preferred if there were less camera directions in the script. I was also surprised to find analyzing scripts similar to analyzing any other literary work. I’m not sure that what I learned will really change the way that I watch a movies. However I will definitely keep what I learned in mind if I make a movie (especially about how to direct actors and interpreting lines from the screenplay). I think it is important for students of film (even if you are not aspiring screenwriters) to be familiar and comfortable with reading and analyzing different styles of screenplays. Thus this class is important.
