Boogie Nights was definitely an interesting read. It's not often that one comes across a screenplay willing to go to such lengths in vulgarity and sexuality, and to be honest, I enjoyed the read partly because of the level of maturity it takes to not be offended by the events and language. It certainly added a certain thrill or harshness to the feel of the read, and acted like a constant shock to the system to keep the reader/audience awake.
However, story-wise, I was sort of disappointed. Throughout almost the entire read, the story felt at least a little far-fetched and, well, like a cliche-ridden, poorly written, and undynamic movie. I'm not saying it was poorly written, but it gave off that kind of feeling. Like a reality tv show. I kept thinking "Where's the host saying 'Welcome back to MTV's Behind the Music.'" Only, with porn instead of music.
Questions -
1. Does the vulgarity and obvious sexual "demonstartions" add or detract from the script's feel? How would the script feel if, instead of porn, they were in some other business of ill repute?
2. I've never seen the film, and don't know who is in it. However, for those of you that have, what kind of effect do you think this film had on the careers of the people playing some of the more "fleshed out" characters of the story? Would this script be good for an actor's career? Or could it be seen as a negative influence?
