Boogie Nights is a rather innocent film. Sure, it deals with pornography, cocaine, and other vices, but don’t let that shock you. It’s a sweet film about family. That whole community was one big family. Jack and Amber were the parents and the rest were the kids (The Colonel was that Grandfather). After the 80’s the family disbanded everyone went to ruin and once they joined together, they all meet success. Boogie Nights tells you if you stick together with your family you can overcome anything.
The structure of the script was obvious written by a director. Anderson clearly told the reader what was going to be on that screen and how it was going to look. Anderson’s influences are revealed through specific camera techniques; the beginning shot was Goodfellas, the large cast was Altman; the last shot was Raging Bull, etc. For those who did not appreciate Boogie Nights cannot deny that is has graced the world with one of the best names in cinema history, Dirk Diggler.
Questions:
1. Did the vernacular of characters offend or shock you? If so, did it have a negative effect on your view of the script?
2. Can pornography be considered cinema?
