Wow.

Boogie Nights is not at all what I thought it was going to be about... The title sounds like a dancing movie, maybe a jazz dance movie or something, not a graphic film about the pornography industry in the 1970's, but I suppose it still works... I thought it was a pretty good screenplay, edgy for any time period, and a little too crass to be recommended or even considered by me, but it was written very well. Most of this script is dialogue, and I feel like P.T. Anderson is one of the best writers of dialogue we've read in this class. It was all very believable and realistic and really helped to reveal what types of characters I was reading about.

As far as the plot goes, like I said before, it's a little too explicit for my liking, and I really didn't see much change in Dirk's character's moral values. It seems like Anderson could have focused more on creating a more intriguing and likeable protagonist by showing more maturity in his actions by the end of the screenplay.

Discussion Questions:
1. Do you feel like all of the characters were well developed? If not, who would you have liked to know more about?

2. How much sex is too much sex in an 'R' rated film/screenplay? Do you think this one went too far?

I essentially asked the same question about the sex content. For an R film, it had just as much as it needed. The script had enough already, and the details within the script probably translated to the film.

Overall, I think that the script should have kept the amount of sex the same. If there was more sex, it could have ruined the narrative.
